As the United States begins to put the darkest days of the pandemic behind us, there is an increasing sense of optimism for "getting back to normal"--or, as I hear many say, establishing a "new normal" for a postpandemic world. I am among those who hope we do not simply go back to where we were and, instead, come out of this experience stronger and more resilient than we went into it. There are a few "big things" that I wish for the future. In the past I might have kept these more private than this column in the notion that they were not specific to the AMS mission.
