Abstract :

Martianus Capella's 'De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii' integrates a carnivalesque allegory of semiotics and liberal arts using poetic and rhetorical figures. The book, which is arguably more interesting than Boethius' commentaries and adaptations on Aristotle, accommodates language's central position in the liberal education of seven arts through singular encoded text, modeling and interpretation.
