Abstract :

The proteorhodopsin (PR) diversity in a North Sea water sample was characterized to cultivate a strain representative of North Sea PR clusters and study the effects of light and carbon concentration on the expression of the PR gene. The strain D. donghaensis PRO95 which expressed the PR gene in medium diluted to a carbon concentration of 9.7 mM, both in the light and in the dark revealed that light did not stimulate growth and hence suggested a need to develop more sensitive methods to detect the physiological function of PR in PRO95.
