Charging that the White House has low-balled the cost to prepare federal systems for the year 2000, Rep. Tom Davis said Congress will use the date code work to test how well chief information officers are doing their jobs.

The Virginia Republican, a member of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, said he is coordinating House oversight efforts to make sure agency CIOs have realistic plans, adequate budgets and ample staff for year 2000 repair work.
