Abstract :

The influence of gender on body image disturbance is examined. Muscle and fat aftereffect magnitude was found larger when observers viewed own-gender stimuli even if the observers' gender or body stimuli had no direct effect. The prevalence of marketed idealized own-gender bodies by media to male and female consumers created implications for the effect in the development of the disturbance.
