The orientation of young and older adults' mental representations of their home town with familiar and new landmarks.

A study was conducted to determine whether mental representations produced by familiarity with an environment have a north-up orientation. The findings show spatial mental representations of home towns are elaborate and flexible with regard to familiar landmarks. However, older adults' spatial memory about new landmarks is not enhanced by a familiar layout.
