Abstract :

Both the textile and apparel industries lost many jobs since the mid 1940s, but for different reasons. Employment in the textile industry decreased by 50% between 1948 and 1994. This was mainly due to extreme technological advances that reduced the need for labor, and the severe financial impact of recessions. The loss of jobs in the apparel industry was mainly due to rising clothing imports. Rising imports also adversely affected textile jobs, but not as severely. Future influences on employment in both sectors such as NAFTA and GATT are discussed.
