Abstract :

A short poem found in a 16th-century Scottish poetry collection called 'The Maitland Quarto Manuscript' gives an important base for examining the manner in which female homoerotic desire was idealized in pre-19th century society and literature and in the early modern period. Entitled XLIX, the poem speaks of ideal friendship and marriage, in which the discussions of both voice the erotic desire between women. It is one of the earliest poems on this topic in the English Renaissance period.
