Abstract :

Julia de Burgos was Puerto Rico's greatest poet, well known in literary circles in the Dominican Republic. Burgos's poetry is autobiographical and political, exploring issues of nationalism and life in the countryside. Several of her works reveal her peasant roots in their identification with nature. Her political poetry deals with national consciousness imbued with a strong feminist sentiment. These poems also explore the life-death dichotomy as reflected in the contradictions in her themes.
