Abstract :

Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos's autobiographical poetry reflects her political beliefs, non-traditional lifestyle and romantic liaisons. Moreover, she has gained renown because of her ideological consciousness, expressed as an attempt to redefine her art, her society and herself in terms unrestricted by societal and literary boundaries. Burgos's poetry also attempts to establish a female poetics in the midst of a literary, social and political culture that is both colonial and nationalistic.
