Abstract :

A feminist sociolinguistic approach was utilized in the teaching of a course in French language and culture to discover possible gender biases in grammar, structure and connotations of the language. Observations revealed the derivation of morphology of adjectives from a masculine base, the presence of semantical dissymmetries between masculine and feminine connotations and the inclusion of the feminine in masculine grammatical constructions. This approach enabled students to identify aspects of sexism contained in the French language.
