Abstract :

The role of new business entrepreneurship in the Japanese economy is studied, including the effect of government activities on new business entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial barriers in Japan. The study shows that more than 99% of Japanese businesses can be classified as small- or medium-scale with more than 80% of Japanese employees working in such firms. However, very few of these fit the category of new business entrepreneurship. The decline in new business entrepreneurship in Japan can be attributed to structural, political and cultural factors.
