Abstract :

The optical counterpart of Galactic superluminal source GRO J1655-40 is expected to be at a distance of only 3 kpc from GRO. Historical photographic plates may have identified the precursor because it brightened by 3 mag in the V bandpass at the time of the X-ray burst in Aug 1994. The 12 day delay between the X ray burst and the main radio outburst indicating the start of superluminal motion is still a riddle to solved. GRO J1655-40's optical wavelength characteristics are like those of other accreting-black-hole candidates.
