Abstract :

Records of freed slaves from Brazil during the 18th and 19th centuries are indicative of slaves' conditions. Complete freedom for the newborn children of slaves came in May 1888, but this law was never completely enforced. The first-generation manumitted slave had to endure widespread discrimination, motivating their successive generations to speed the process of freedom for all.
