Abstract :

Amphoteric compounds and their metabolites are ubiquitous as amino acids, peptides, neurotransmitters, coenzymes, and drugs in biochemical processes. Lipophilicity is a critical factor in drug distribution and, for ampholytes, is pH-dependent. In zwitterionic ampholytes, both acidic and basic groups can be simultaneously ionized. Such compounds display relatively constant lipophilicity near the isoelectric pH range, acting as partitioning buffers in the physiologic pH range.
