Abstract :

The molecular mechanisms that mediate the developmental increase in murine whole brain 2-deoxyglucose uptake are examined. Northern and Western blot analyses revealed an age-dependent increase in brain glucose transformer isoforms from endothelial cell and glial tissue (GLUT-1) and neuronal tissue (GLUT-3). Nuclear run-on experiments showed that these developmental changes in GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 were regulated posttranscriptionally. Results also suggest that age-dependent increase is essential in meeting the increased demand of the maturing brain to fuel processes such as cellular growth.
