Abstract :

A study is made to formulate a scale of relative hydrogen bond basicity for different solutes based on their retention in gas chromatography. A powerful hydrogen bond donor is employed as an active hydrogen bond donor phase while a related ether is used as a chemically similar but hydrogen bond inert reference point. The results reveal that discretion should be practiced when using hydrogen bond basicity scales.
