Abstract :

The core histone octamer of wheat Triticum aestivum was studied by gel filtration and sedimentation studies. The wheat histone octamer showed stability at 0.6 M NaCl whereas vertebrate animal octamer dissociates into tetramers and dimers. Decreased NaCl concentration to 0.3 M disrupted the forces which stabilize the wheat histone octamer. The stability of the wheat octamer is attributed to H2 histones, H2A and H2B, since plant and animal H3 and H4 histones are essentially identical.
