Abstract :

The isolation and identification of a cDNA from a mouse brain library that encodes a protein with an amino acid sequence that is 42% identical and 64% similar to that of the amyloid beta protein precursor (APP) was reported. APP is a precursor of beta-A4, a protein associated with Alzheimer disease, Down's syndrome and to a lesser extent, normal aging processes. The polypeptide was named amyloid precursor-like protein (APLP) and was shown to have significant honology to APP-like proteins in the rat and in Drosophila. An understanding of the functions of the well-conserved APP gene family could provide clues to the pathology of Alzheimer's disease.
