Abstract :

LEAN is a set of operating philosophies and methods that, when applied to the healthcare setting, can help create maximum value for patients by reducing waste and unnecessary waits. An emphasis is placed on the customers' needs, employee involvement and continuous improvement.1For the purposes of this article the customer is the patient. In April 2017 the Adult Surgery Program at the IWK Health Centre was involved in a comprehensive initiative to help improve efficiency in the Adult Surgery OR. Using LEAN principles, the patient's surgical journey was examined closely by a multidisciplinary team where, multiple initiatives were identified. One of the first initiatives explored was the turnaround time between OR cases. By integrating LEAN methods in workflow, improvements in turnaround times were recognized. L'approche LEAN consiste en une serie de philosophies et de methodes d'exploitation qui, lorsqu'elles sont appliquees au milieu des soins de la sante, peuvent aider a creer une valeur optimale pour les patients en reduisant le gaspillage et l'attente non necessaires. Cette approche est axee sur les besoins des clients, la participation des employes et l'amelioration continue.1Aux fins du present article, le client designe le patient. En avril 2017, le programme de chirurgie pour adultes du IWK Health Centre a participe a une initiative exhaustive afin d'ameliorer l'efficience du service de chirurgie en SOP pour les adultes. En se basant sur les principes LEAN, une equipe multidisciplinaire examinait soigneusement le cheminement chirurgical du patient au cours duquel plusieurs initiatives etaient identifiees. L'une des premieres initiatives ayant ete examinees etait le temps interoperatoire entre les cas en SOP. En incorporant les methodes LEAN dans le deroulement du travail, on a constate une amelioration du temps interoperatoire.
