Abstract :

Music historians have encountered the anecdote that British bands played a march called "The World Turned Upside Down" during the surrender at Yorktown on Oct 19, 1781. However, no strong evidence supports this event. The story appears to have originated with Maj. William Jackson, who was not at Yorktown, so his story is at best a third-hand account, and there are no other reliable witnesses. The British probably played various songs, but no witness recorded any titles.
