Abstract :

Eighteenth-century African-American writer Phillis Wheatley's poem "Ocean" was bought by collector Mark E. Mitchell for $68,5000 in May 1998 at an auction at Christie's in New York, NY. The poem reflects upon the themes of travel and time as it uses the figure of Neptune for poetic effect. It is a valuable contribution to Mitchell's "Collection of African-American History" and to the American literary canon.
