Abstract :

Lead in the body may delay puberty in some girls, especially African-American and Mexican-American girls. This was the conclusion of a study of 2,186 girls. Blood levels as low as three micrograms per deciliter were associated with delays in breast development and pubic hair growth. In African-American girls with this blood lead level, puberty was delayed by an average of four months compared with girls with lower lead levels.
