Overview
The second largest country in Latin America, Argentina boasts abundant natural resources and a well-educated workforce. It became the first Latin American country to pass legislation permitting same-sex marriage in July 2010 and has made landmark advances in addressing past human rights violations through its judicial system. In December 2022, fans celebrated the World Cup victory of its beloved men's national fútbol, or soccer, team. However, Argentina has struggled with political and economic stability. Ongoing problems of inflation, public debt, corruption, social unrest, high poverty rates, and political repression challenge the country's ability to thrive in the early twenty-first century.
