Civic Participation
Overview
Civic participation, also called civic engagement, describes people being active in issues that matter to the community. These issues include voting, volunteering, and participating in community organizations such as sports teams and clubs. Civic participation may benefit individuals, groups, or entire communities. It is believed to improve the health of a democratic society.
Civic engagement was very important in Ancient Rome. Citizens believed they had a duty to be involved in government. The primary civic involvement of Ancient Roman men was to vote. Many wealthy men also held office.
