Social and Emotional Learning
Overview
Traditionally, schools have focused on teaching academic skills. Classes have sought to teach students facts and figures. Few schools attempted to address the personal feelings and social growth of their students.
In the twenty-first century, schools are more complex and involved. People in schools may have different cultures, languages, and backgrounds. Administrators, teachers, and students must pay attention to cooperation and understanding. At the same time, schools also teach many skills traditionally taught by families, such as self-understanding and respect for others. Many of these concerns are addressed in the push for social and emotional learning (SEL).
