Native Americans
Overview
Native Americans were the original inhabitants of North America. They were organized into large social groups called tribes. Each tribe was led by a chieftain. The Native Americans originally welcomed the settlers, and began a trading agreement that helped both groups. However, as time went on, violence erupted between the settlers and the Native Americans. The settlers forced Native Americans to relocate, eventually moving them to small reservations in areas far from their homes.
Native Americans are of Eurasian ancestry. Most experts believe people first traveled to North America roughly 23,000 years ago. At that time, sea levels were much lower because much of the water was frozen in glaciers. This exposed a land bridge between modern-day Russia and Canada....
