Squanto
Overview
Squanto was a member of the Pawtuxet band of Native Americans who lived in the Massachusetts Bay region during the seventeenth century. He was kidnapped by Thomas Hunt and sold into slavery in Europe. Upon his return to North America, Squanto discovered that his entire band was wiped out by a plague.
Following the death of his people, Squanto began working with English settlers. He had learned to speak English while enslaved in Europe and was able to serve as an interpreter. Squanto helped the pilgrims learn to farm and taught them how to interact with local tribes of Native Americans. This allowed many of the Pilgrims to survive their first winter in America.
