Renewable Energy
Overview
The United States and other industrialized nations use massive amounts of energy to power factories, automobiles, electrical appliances, and other features of modern life. The three main sources of energy are fossil fuels, nuclear power, and renewable energy sources. Fossil fuels are substances such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas formed from the decay of organic matter over millions of years, while nuclear power is generated from radioactive material. They are considered nonrenewable energy sources because their supply is limited. Renewable energy sources, in contrast, are natural forces that are continually replenished and can be utilized without being depleted.
