Online education refers to the use of the internet and other digital communications technologies for any type of learning or instruction. Online education grew out of previous models of distance learning. Early correspondence courses were conducted through the postal system and later aided by telephone, radio, television, and advances in audio-video recording technologies. The first internal computer network allowing instructors to post course materials for student access was created in the 1960s at the University of Illinois. By the end of the twentieth century, modern online education was evolving rapidly alongside the expansion of web-based programs and applications.
