COVID-19 vaccines (commonly called COVID vaccines) are specifically designed to stimulate an immune response, including antibodies, capable of reducing the risk of contracting COVID-19 upon exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and, if COVID-19 disease does develop post exposure, reducing the severity of the disease.
As of 22 August, 2021, 28 COVID-19 vaccines were widely in use around the world. Nine of those vaccines were approved by country-level regulatory agencies with the remainder being used on an emergency use authorization (EUA) basis.
