Suicide is defined as the act of intentionally killing oneself. The practice is prevalent in the United States, where suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the country. According to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2021, 47,511 people died of suicide in 2019, or about 14.5 out of every 100,000 Americans. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for Americans aged 10–34, and the fourth for those aged 35–54. Suicide rates in the United States rose steadily from 1999 to 2018, though they dipped slightly in 2019.
