The Kite Runner is the debut novel of author Khaled Hosseini (1965–). Published in 2003, the book tells the story of Amir, an Afghan American who grew up in Kabul during a number of important events in Afghanistan’s history, including the end of its monarchy, the Soviet-Afghan War, and the emergence of the Taliban. Amir’s childhood in Afghanistan has profound effects on his life.
