Teen Suicide
Overview
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide was the second leading cause of death of those between the ages of ten and twenty-four in 2019. The CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey from 2019 states that female students in grades 9–12 attempted suicide almost twice as often as male students.
A 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health conducted by the Trevor Project indicated that two in five LGBTQ+ teens have seriously considered committing suicide during the last year. LGBTQ+ teens often experience depression because of societal discrimination. Those living in an unsupportive household were at the highest risk of committing suicide.
