Holocaust
Overview
The Holocaust was a mass killing program implemented against European Jews by Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945 because Adolf Hitler (1889–1945), the leader of Nazi Germany, believed Jews to be subhuman and wanted to eliminate them from Europe to keep them from mingling with the German people, whom he considered a superior race.
Referred to by the Nazis as the “Final Solution” to the Jewish question, the Holocaust did not begin as a genocide program. For most of the 1930s, the Nazis persecuted Jews by forcing them into ghetto villages, terrorizing them, and stripping them of their legal rights, with the killing phase of the Holocaust lasting primarily from 1941 to 1945.
