Overview
Ancient Rome grew from settlements near the Tiber River to become one of the greatest empires of the ancient world. It did so through a process of assimilation and adaptation. While Romans were well-known for conquest, they also absorbed aspects of other cultures—most notably those of the ancient Greeks—and made them their own.
The story of Romulus and Remus, a pair of half-divine twins, is the most popular legend about the founding of Rome during the eighth century b.c.e. The twins were said to have been abandoned near the Tiber River at birth and grew up to establish a city. Romulus then killed his brother in a quarrel and became the first king of Rome.
